Battle recap

Both sides' deployment means we're playing on a "small table" again. The Daemons are concentrated closer to the middle of the table, while the elves are closer to their right half of the table. The Scouts deploy to block the Furies' vanguard move. The Daemons win the roll to go first.

Turn 1

It starts off funny - the Crushers fail their Impetuous test, I wonder whether I can re-roll it somehow and hmmm, I guess not, cavalry goes forward. The cavalry shoots and flees behind their own line. That roll basically sets up the whole battle and forces the Daemons' further moves. I push the Furies (unpainted) to the centre (which will later turn out to be a blessing and a curse, I didn't foresee the CoK charge), the red Furies a bit forward. The Flamers have a nice little hideout in the forest and sit there nicely. The Bloodthirster takes up a position to counter the dragon - which is already fidgeting, thinking it will grind up the Crushers... :) The cannon puts 2 wounds (I think) on the dragon, the Flamers burn off the fast cavalry. DE At the start of the turn the Sorceress casts all 3 buff spells on the CoK - they want blood... "but the power of the ring cannot be undone" :P the Daemons roll a "6" for Daemonic Instability and have a 4+ ward for this turn, The dragon and the main CoK unit with the Sorceress charge the Crushers (who counter-charge), the other CoK charge the Furies. The Witches fail to reach the charge, rolling two ones. The skirmishers fail to rally. The Crushers' champion and the Cold One champion duel and this is where the fun begins (Ajax forgets something - his buffs - which probably wouldn't have changed much, since the wards were going great). The CoK champion dies. The DE Lord, the dragon and the remaining CoK do little (4 wounds in total, I think). In response the Herald of Khorne takes down 2 Cold Ones with Killing Blow (I know, I know, I also have Cleaving Blow built in, but Killing Blow sounds more beautiful), the end result is that 1 Crusher dies, all the Cold Ones die, and the dragon with the Sorceress stays on the field. Break test and we stand... waiting for the Bloodthirster On the other flank, despite heavy losses (9 Furies and 1 CoK die in total), they manage not to break and to hold the flank.

Turn 2

The Bloodthirster flies in with one intention: "give me that dragon to beat up" - as it turns out, it's not that simple ;) The red Furies charge the CoK - they do nothing and bounce off, the others fly off into the aether - meanwhile the CoK turn around hoping to help the dragon. The main combat doesn't go the Daemons' way, the Bloodthirster takes 3 wounds, 1 Crusher falls, while the dragon soaks up wounds (I think it's left with 7), but the Sorceress dies. The Flamers pepper the Witches. The cannon puts 2 wounds on Hag's chariot. The Flesh Hounds wander about - in the end nobody knows why - they take no part in the battle. DE There's no photo here - forgotten in the heat of battle. The Witches can't charge because the Bloodthirster has a smaller base and I can't get them in contact. The CoK slam into the Bloodthirster's flank - the guys beat each other up - the Bloodthirster is left on 1 wound!!! And the dragon on 4. The result of the combat is that the Daemons lose - they fall back, the dragon joins in. The CoK pull back - they want to take the chariot in the front rather than the flank!

Turn 3

The Skull Cannon charges into the CoK, the Furies block the Witches (in the end they'll pay for it next turn by going back to the aether). The Flamers on my right line up and burn the Riders' gift, the others roast the Witches without effect. In combat the Skull Cannon kills 2 CoK, taking 1 wound. And finally comes the moment when the Bloodthirster (on its last wound) strikes, 2 wounds get through the pendant, multiplication, and we have 4 wounds, just what was needed. The centre breaks. DE The Witches send the Furies back where they belong (according to DE), the CoK fight the daemonic cannon. Assessing the situation on the battlefield, we decide to just play it out all-in. In tournament play the Bloodthirster and the Crushers should have pulled back and the Flamers would have had turns 4, 5 and 6 to pepper the Witches from close range. In turn 5 the Bloodthirster and the Crushers would have swept up the remaining CoK. On that basis I calculated the result 17:3 Great battle where Ajax goes all-in in the first turn (who else) :)
