Battle recap

the dragon stood in for the Frostheart Phoenix the White Lion chariot stood in for the hero on a light chariot I didn't really have a plan for the game, other than to push forward, hope I don't take too many hits and crash into the war machines. Luckily I won the roll-off for first turn, so one less cannon volley :) On my left the "lone wolf" Noble on a light chariot, the main force in the middle, the mage in the big cavalry unit, the second chariot and the phoenix hidden behind the forest. My HE magic spells were: - plus 2 to cast for the opponent, - ethereal and reserved move, - ward 5+, - a missile with a big template Empire spells: - ruby ring - fireball - panic and give ground - there was something else but I don't remember The Empire focused on defending the hill.

Turn 1

HE: I went first and the lone wolf flew at the cavalry unit, believing he'd survive the break test at -1 and be winning by the next turn. Center moved forward, the unit with the mage wanted to cast ethereal and reserved move. Unfortunately I didn't position it very well and ended up within dispel range (about half an inch too close), so my extra move was a no-go. The light cavalry killed one outrider with their bows. Empire: On the left a charge into the chariot, in the center a combo with the block of swordsmasters to block my cavalry. Luckily for Roman he realized that I can always charge things on the hill. The Helblaster and outriders blast the dragons, they shook it off a bit and I lost only two! The dragons themselves were surprised :) The cannon did nothing, the archers neither. In combat the guy on the chariot killed the cavalry champion, I lose by 1. I fail the break test (10 on the dice) and say: "well, that's for those dragons". Luckily Roman rolled an inch less, so everything ended well :)

Turn 2

HE: In my turn I rally the chariot, the phoenix hits the Helblaster, the general hits the Demigryphs, the dragons and the big cavalry unit hit the block. From shooting another outrider falls. In combat with the infantry Roman made maybe one save, so I killed about 10. There were twice as many of me so no give ground, which pleased me because that way something else will join the combat with the Demigryphs. Rom rolled high on the break test, so the block was eaten. The big cavalry unit joined the second combat. There, a concert of bad rolls. From impact attacks, the hero, the chariot crew, the eagle and 5 cavalrymen I deal one wound. The Empire returned the favor and also dealt one wound. I win the combat by 3 (close order, standard, rank) and there are twice as many of me. Another beautiful failed break test and the unit is eaten. The phoenix deals two wounds to the Helblaster and we stand. Empire: The cavalry charges the chariot, they overrun 1 inch, so there's no bonus to the number of attacks. From magic, fireballs hit the big cavalry unit and 3-4 fall. The outriders have had enough of being harassed by the Ellyrians and shoot back, sweeping them off the table. The Helblaster falls in combat, I fail the Ld test and run off the map.

Turn 3

HE: I fly the phoenix up to the cannon, cavalry forward. No point camping, a good volley from the outriders or one fireball can take out a unit of mine. From spells I get ethereal and ward 5+. Combat of the lone wolf with the cavalry, I deal two wounds, and lose by the musician. Empire: They fire everything they can at the phoenix and take it down in one turn, the outriders try their luck against the dragons, and they remain unfazed, just brushing the dust off their armor.

Turn 4

HE: I crash into the archers, and they bravely put up a fight! The lone wolf finally beat the cavalry, the archers from the chariot shoot something at the lone mage. Empire: The archers fall, attempts with magic to take out my general, the outriders retreat. The cannon sees nothing. From an overrun the cavalry hits the hero, the dragons move forward.

Turn 5

The dragons hit the mage and kill him. The cavalry probably wounds the hero. The outriders with their last strength shoot at the lone wolf, with no results. So a win of around 15-5. The Empire's first turn of shooting mattered a lot, a few wounds dealt earlier on the cavalry and the result could have turned completely around. Great battle! Thanks Rom!
