The Format Idea
The Goblin Tales is a mad, narrative tournament format where battles are shaped as much by strategy as by fate and therefore is highly recommended even for novice and first time player letting you enjoy the game even if you are not an expert general.
At the start of each round—and sometimes in the thick of battle—the roll of a dice may twist the rules of engagement, summon divine attention, or unleash forces far beyond the control of any general.
This is not a test of perfect optimization. It is a test of adaptability, creativity, risk managment and nerve!
If you are looking for a predictable competition, look elsewhere. But if you want to fight battles that turn into stories— stories you’ll be telling in the next tavern you visit—then you are in the right place.
GENERAL CONDUCT
a.k.a. “Don’t Be That Goblin” :
- Remember: we all live in a slightly broken world, and everyone came here to enjoy their free time. So take care of your own comfort—and your opponent’s.
- Always roll dice where your opponent can clearly see them. No sneaky goblin business.
-Any die that isn’t lying flat or falls off the table must be rerolled.
Gravity is a harsh but fair judge.
- If your opponent forgets a special rule, don’t exploit it—remind them. Today it’s them, tomorrow it’s you forgetting something important and crying inside.
- Communicate your intentions clearly. Example: “I’m standing behind the forest so your cannon can’t see me.” Confirm it together. Less arguing. More battling!
- Measure charges and other range-based actions before rolling, and agree on the required result together. No “surprise, I needed less!” moments.
- In disputes: don’t argue. Find a compromise, resolve it in the spirit of the game. If needed, do a roll-off. If it’s still messy—call a judge.
- When building the list, take a last look at it before submitting and ask yourself theese questions: “Would I actually enjoy playing against this?”
If the answer is “no” (or “only if I hate myself”), maybe rethink it!
Army Composition Rules:
Every army should be composed following the below “Highlander style" aka "There can be only one" limitations:
- 1250 points;
- A single unit or character is capped at 312 points,
- Minimum 40% of Core units;
- You may include only one of each Special,Rare and Character choices;
- Only one of each Common Magic Items may be taken in the army (this includes runes);
- The army may include only one Bound Spell;
- Each Lore of Magic may be taken by only one wizard and only one instance of each Signature Spell may be selected;
- You may include up to two (!) identical Core units, but they should (if possible) be equipped differently;
- The army may include only one Ethereal unit (this applies to units that can toggle Ethereal on/off);
- Renegade rules 2.0 apply to Legacy Armies. Yes-yes!
- Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings may not use the BSB re-roll for failed LD tests related to Invocation of Nehek and Arise!
- The Sky Lantern may not be taken as a mount;
- Named Characters are not allowed... but please name your characters and create stories for them!

The Modelling Rules:
The hobby part is an important part of the storytelling and therefore The Goblin Tales encourages painted armies and creativity! And so:
- Proxies are allowed, as long as it is clear what they represent and an avarage goblin would be able to understand your army composition;
- Units that include a Command Group must have models allowing their role to be easily identified;
- Each unit should have at least the first 2 ranks equipped with the weapons they are using;
- Any army that is fully painted, visually cohesive and follows the above rules, receives 3 Goblin Coins during registration!
- An army with at least 60% US painted recieves 2 Goblin Coins;
- And and army with at least 1 unit painted recieves 1 Goblin Coin.
- The painted Baggage Train model grants you an additional Goblin Coin.
Additionally, during registration there will be a Vote for the best / most thematic BSB model. Each army that includes a painted BSB model that enters the contest recieves 1 Goblin Coin.
The winners will receive additional 3 / 2 / and 1 Goblin Coins and Big Victory Points for the 1st / 2nd / and 3rd place accoringly.
Goblin Coins Uses:
The Goblin Coins are the heart and the soul of the Goblin Tales system and have multiple uses that may help you convince the gods of the fate that vicory should be on your side!
Most Goblin Tales have some additional ways to spend or earn Goblin Coins, but...
Here are the most common uses:
- Reroll one of your own dice – 1 Goblin Coin;
- Reroll one of the opponent’s dice – 2 Goblin Coins;
- Reroll all the dice in your roll – 3 Goblin Coins.
- Whoever has the most Goblin Coins at the end of the day gets +3 additional Big Victory Points.
Please rememeber that no single dice can be re-rolled more than once, regardless of the source of the re-roll. If you want to break that rule it will cost you an extra 1 Goblin Coin!
Additional Considerations:
- After each use, the coin goes straight into the Organizer’s stash. No arguments!
- Any unused coins at the end of the tournament must also be returned. Kindly. Voluntarily. Preferably without being chased. Goblins really don’t like when coins go missing.
- Exception: coins awarded as prizes at the end of the tournament are yours to keep. You earned those. Probably.
- Important: Prize coins are playable. That means when you return for the next edition of Goblin Tales, you can bring them with you… and spend them again!
